ESVA:
The Washington State Challenge is now officially open. There are 2 programs available. The “A to Z” program and the “39 Counties” program. What is the Washington State Challenge? A group which sponsors incentive programs for AVA walks completed in Washington State. The first Challenge: “A to Z”, allows less mobile walkers to stick primarily to the Seattle/Tacoma corridor. Almost all of the walks are in place. They are new and interesting, and there are fewer walks to complete for an award, (26). Walkers will purchase an “A to Z” booklet for $5 to $7. Collect stamps from AVA sanctioned walks in Washington State. Each walk’s start town/city must begin with a different letter of the alphabet. (Ex. “A” for Aberdeen). Walks must be dated after start of Challenge. (June ’02). X and J are wild, as there are no towns in Washington than begin with those letters. Complete the booklet and send in for award. The program is managed by NW Tulip Trekkers (Curtis Myron) and Yakima Valley Sunstriders (Millie Haupt).
“39 Counties”: Purchase the booklet for $5 to $7. Collect stamps from AVA sanctioned walks in Washington State. You must walk an event in each of the 39 counties. One walk can qualify for more than one county. (Ex. Coulee Dam YRE hits three counties) You can write in walks completed in the past. Complete booklet and send in for award. This program is managed by Jane Holmes of the Emerald City Wanderers and Dick Baker of the Vancouver USA Volkssporters.
REGIONAL DIRECTOR:
No report
AVA:
Shirley Lindberg, AVA Vice President made a report. The Executive Council XII met in Cherry Hill, NJ for its third meeting of the term on April 6, 2002. The location was being reviewed as the site chosen for the 2005 AVA Convention. Some of the special events to report on are the National Heritage program, which includes the Route 66 program and the Original 13 States program. The programs beginning January 1, 2003 are Lewis and Clark, Civil War Battlefields, and New England Colleges. New Business that was discussed was to investigate ways to get Starting Point into the hands of the general public. Also discussed was an addition to the policy manual to retain start cards or registration logs with the signed waiver for YRE and Seasonal events for seven years.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Dupont walk 2002: A check for $500 was sent to the Mayor. A sanction request was sent to the Regional Director for our walk there in 2003. Also our request for New Balance to be our sponsor was submitted.
Northwest Trek: Will be on June 8th. The workers list is available for those who have not as yet signed up. JP and Dianne are in charge of this event. Workers will be notified of assignments at least one week before the walk. This year the start point will be in the picnic area. The Girl Scouts will have a separate table. Food will be sold where we usually set up. 143 girl scouts have pre-registered at this time. Water for the check point will be furnished by Talking Rain Company of North Bend.
The Norpoint walk is on October 5th. Dean Puckett is in charge of the walk.
NEW BUSINESS:
Star Club recognition was due by May 31st. It has been completed and submitted. We earned enough points to make the Gold Level for the second time. We were 1.8 points short of making the Platinum level. We need more club members to become AVA Associate members to reach the platinum level.
DONATIONS:
In the 10 years that we have been a club we have donated a total of $13,278 +.
A motion was made that we donate $500 to the AVA general fund, and in 2 months we will review the need and perhaps donate another $500. The motion was seconded and passed.
CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE:
The candidates for club officers will be announced at our May meeting. Our Club bylaws allow for additional nominations to be taken from the floor at our June meeting.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:04pm. Our next meeting will be held on May 22, 2002.
